The program

The Brown Collective's flagship program, Leading from Within, acknowledges the importance of middle leaders to a school's and system's performance.

Research indicates that most middle leaders want to remain in their roles and are committed to supporting students to achieve their potential. It is vital therefore that middle leaders are provided with opportunities to continue their leadership formation to enhance this impact and to assist their effectiveness with staff and all stakeholders within a school community.

Leading from Within supports and enhances the formation of middle leaders through the exploration of key aspects of their roles such as leading teams, supporting and enhancing student engagement, and leading teaching and learning. The program is aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Middle Leaders.

Customised delivery

Every program is customised to ensure contextual relevance to the school, network, region or system — typically conducted over a nine-month period with an agreed minimum number of participants.

1 unit credit

Successful completion enables participants to apply for a one-unit credit towards a master's degree offered by ACU and BBI.

Five phases

The program journey.

The TBC flagship leadership development program targets the formation of middle leaders. The core components are as follows.

Phase 2 Legends Room, Eagle Farm Racecourse, Ascot
Phase 5 CiTEL Centre, Lourdes Hill College, Hawthorne

01
Phase 1 · Self-paced within delivery timelines

Self reflection & TEAMS 360

February 2027
Participants complete a 360 diagnostic instrument, an individual profile and a range of self-reflective activities such as professional readings and personal discernment about their leadership style. The 360 feedback survey — TEAMS, The Excellence in Australian Middle-Leadership in Schools — is aligned with the AITSL Standard for Middle Leaders.
02
Phase 2 · Two-day face-to-face workshop

Understanding self & leading teams

Tue 9 – Wed 10 March 2027 Legends Room, Eagle Farm Racecourse, Ascot
Understanding self, leading teams, teaching and learning, curriculum and change. Participants undertake a Leadership Learning Challenge for presentation in Phase 5 — drawn from their current work, not additional to it. Each participant works with their supervisor to gain sign-off and to draw on their expertise as the challenge progresses.
03
Phase 3 · Coaching session & learning challenge

Individual coaching

April – May 2027
A one-hour 1:1 online session with an executive coach to debrief the TEAMS 360 report completed in Phase 1, and to refine the leadership learning challenge.
04
Phase 4 · 60-minute online session

Cohort check-in

Wednesday 9 June 2027
Participants share individual updates on challenge implementation, and facilitators confirm expectations for the Phase 5 presentations through facilitated discussion.
05
Phase 5 · One-day workshop

Leadership learning challenges

Tuesday 24 August 2027 CiTEL Centre, Lourdes Hill College, Hawthorne
Leadership reflections — individual growth and lessons related to innovation, change and culture. In this final phase participants present their Leadership Learning Challenge to peers using a mix of adult learning protocols, and reflect on their development as a leader.
